You must pass the Driving Knowledge (written) Test, which covers the handbook's road signs, impaired-driving rules, driving rules and safety, before a permit is issued; it can be taken in a DMV office or online at home. The DMV pages I could read do not state the number of questions or the passing score. Source.

The youngest permit age is 15 with a 30-hour driver education course; at 15 1/2 a 4-hour driver awareness program is enough, and from 16 no course is needed. Minors must hold the permit 12 months and log 50 hours (10 at night) before a license. Source.

The questions come from the Colorado Driver Handbook (DR 2337) (DR 2337 (12/05/24), posted as the January 2025 edition, read 2026-10-12), which is what the real test is written from. Read it alongside these questions: every answer above names the section it comes from.

Colorado rules worth knowing before the test

  • If you are younger than 16 and a half when you apply for a license, you also need 6 hours of in-car lessons from an approved driver education instructor. Source
  • Anyone under 18 needs an Affidavit of Liability (DR 2460) signed by a parent, guardian or other responsible adult, who accepts legal responsibility for the teen's driving. Source
  • Colorado drivers may not use a mobile device while driving except hands-free or to reach police, the fire department or in an emergency, and may not text at all while driving. Source
  • On average, BAC drops by only about 0.015% per hour; only time sobers you up. Source
  • New Colorado residents must get a Colorado license within 30 days of becoming a resident. Source
  • After a failed drive test, the earliest retest is the next business day. Source
