Learner permit from
age 14 years 9 months

Teens under 18 take the state's Segment 1 driver education exam, an 80-question test that needs at least 70 percent (56 correct) to pass; adults 18 and older take the Secretary of State's multiple-choice knowledge test, which has an operator section and a road-sign section, and the official pages we could read do not give its question count or pass mark. Source.

A Michigan teen can get a Level 1 Learner's License at 14 years 9 months after finishing Segment 1 of driver education (classes can start at 14 years 8 months). The teen must hold it at least six months and log at least 50 supervised hours, 10 of them at night, before the driving skills test; adults 18 and older instead get a 180-day temporary instruction permit and must practice for at least 30 days. Source.

The questions come from the What Every Driver Must Know (SOS-133) (October 2025, read 2026-10-12), which is what the real test is written from. Read it alongside these questions: every answer above names the section it comes from.

Michigan rules worth knowing before the test

  • Michigan's Graduated Driver Licensing has three levels for drivers under 18: Level 1 Learner's, Level 2 Intermediate (age 16 or older) and Level 3 Full (age 17 or older), plus two segments of driver education. Source
  • With a Level 2 license you may not drive from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. or carry more than one passenger under 21, unless an exception applies, such as a parent or a designated adult 21 or older riding with you. Source
  • Every Michigan driver is banned from holding or using a phone while driving, including calls and texts; teens with a Level 1 or Level 2 license may not make or take any non-emergency calls, because the hands-free allowance covers only Level 3 and other drivers. Source
  • When you pass a stopped emergency vehicle with its lights flashing, slow to at least 10 mph under the posted limit and move over a lane if traffic allows. Source
  • Stop at least 20 feet from a school bus with flashing red overhead lights; you do not have to stop if the bus is on the other side of a highway split by a barrier such as a median. Source
  • Michigan bans parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 30 feet of a stop sign or traffic light, and within 50 feet of the nearest rail of a railroad crossing. Source

Signs, markings and signals
