  1. 1. What is the youngest age at which you can get a Utah learner permit?

Utah issues the entry-level learner permit from age 15, after you pass the knowledge test and an eye test.

Source: Section 3, Driver Education and Permits: Entry-Level Learner Permit, p. 7

  2. 2. A Utah teen with a learner permit must log how much supervised driving with a parent or guardian before getting a license?

    Show the answer

Answer: C. 40 hours, with 10 after sunset

Along with driver education, a Utah teen needs 40 hours of practice with a parent or legal guardian, and 10 of those hours must be after sunset.

Source: Section 3, Driver Education and Permits: Completion of Driver Education for Ages 15-18, p. 6

  3. 3. An 18-year-old who has never been licensed wants a first Utah Class D license. How long must they hold a learner permit first?

    Show the answer

Answer: B. No set time, but they must finish an approved driver education course

At 18 there is no permit holding period, but driver education is still required. The six-month wait is for ages 16 and 17, and the 90-day option is for those 19 and older.

Source: Section 3, Driver Education and Permits: Learner Permit Holding Periods, p. 7

  4. 4. A 20-year-old who has never had a license chooses not to take driver education. How long must they hold a learner permit in Utah?

    Show the answer

    Answer: D. 90 days

From age 19, you can skip driver education if you hold the permit for 90 days and log 40 hours of practice. Finishing an approved course removes the 90-day wait.

  5. 5. A 16-year-old who has a Utah driver license (not a permit) may not drive during which hours, unless an exception applies?

    Show the answer

    Answer: B. Midnight to 5 a.m.

A licensed 16-year-old may not drive from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. unless driving to or from work or a school activity, on farm work, in an emergency, or with a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat.

  6. 6. For the first six months after a 16-year-old gets a Utah license, who may ride with them when no exception applies?

    Show the answer

Answer: C. Immediate family members only

For six months from the license date, a 16-year-old may carry only immediate family members. The exceptions are a licensed driver 21 or older in the front seat, farm work, or an emergency.

  7. 7. What is Utah's legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for a non-commercial driver aged 21 or older?

    Show the answer

    Answer: D. 0.05

Utah sets its limit at 0.05 BAC (0.04 for commercial drivers), and it was the first state to use 0.05. Even below that, you break the law if alcohol leaves you unable to drive safely.

  8. 8. A Utah driver aged 21 or older is convicted of DUI for the first time. How long is their driver license suspended?

    Show the answer

    Answer: B. 120 days

A first DUI conviction for a driver 21 or older brings a 120-day license suspension. A second or later offense brings two years.

Source: Section 10, Alcohol/Drugs and Driving: C. Alcohol and the Law, p. 52

  9. 9. A driver 21 or older refuses an officer's chemical test for the first time. How long is their Utah license revoked?

    Show the answer

    Answer: B. 18 months

Under Utah's implied consent law, a first refusal revokes the license for 18 months, and a second refusal for 36 months. That is much longer than the suspension for a first DUI conviction.

Source: Section 10, Alcohol/Drugs and Driving: Implied Consent Law, p. 53

  10. 10. How close to a fire hydrant may you park in Utah?

age 15

A first-time applicant who has never been licensed takes a closed-book, 50-question test and needs a score of 80% (40 correct) to pass; a driver who was licensed before takes an open-book, 25-question test. Source.

The questions come from the Utah Driver Handbook (AAMVA Model Non-Commercial) (2026 (opens with "New 2026 Laws", effective May 6, 2026), read 2026-10-12), which is what the real test is written from. Read it alongside these questions: every answer above names the section it comes from.

Utah rules worth knowing before the test

  • Your knowledge test score and your learner permit both stay valid for 18 months, and you must have the permit with you whenever you drive. Source
  • Before your first Class D license, you must also pass the online Traffic Safety and Trends Exam with a perfect score. You can retake it as many times as you need. Source
  • Utah's legal alcohol limit for drivers is 0.05 BAC, lower than most states, and you can still be charged below it if you are too impaired to drive safely. Source
  • Courts must fine a driver caught speeding in a highway work zone at least twice the normal speeding fine. Source
  • Studded snow tires are allowed only from October 15 through March 31. Source
  • If you drive in the left lane of a multi-lane highway and a faster car comes up behind you, you must move right to let it by, or you can be cited for impeding traffic. Source
  • Drivers over 18 may talk on a phone only by voice command; no driver may type, read texts, browse or take photos on a handheld phone while the car is moving. Source
