Oregon Permit Practice Test

A free Oregon permit practice test: 10 questions written from the Oregon Driver Manual, each with the right answer and the reason. The real test has 35 questions and you need 28 right to pass.

10 questions. Pick an answer to see if you are right.

  1. 1. If no other speed is posted, what is the speed limit when you drive in an alley in Oregon?

    Show the answer

    Answer: B. 15 mph

Oregon law sets 15 mph for alleys and narrow residential areas unless a sign shows a different speed. Keep it slow, because alleys are tight and people can step out without warning.

  2. 2. What is the speed limit in an Oregon business district when no different speed is posted?

    Show the answer

    Answer: C. 20 mph

Oregon sets 20 mph in any business district unless signs say otherwise. Busy shopping streets have many people on foot and cars pulling in and out.

  3. 3. You are on an Oregon road that is not an alley, business district, school zone, residential district, park, beach or interstate, and no limit is posted. How fast may you go?

    Show the answer

    Answer: D. 55 mph

For any road or highway that fits none of the other categories, Oregon's limit is 55 mph unless a sign shows another speed. You must still slow down when conditions call for it.

  4. 4. A school speed sign says its 20 mph limit applies during school hours. When must you obey it?

    Show the answer

Answer: A. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a day school is in session

A school-hours sign means 20 mph between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on school days. If you are not sure whether school is in session that day, slow to 20 mph anyway.

  5. 5. Under Oregon's "basic rule," can you break the law while driving slower than the posted speed limit?

    Show the answer

Answer: C. Yes, if your speed is unsafe for the conditions at the time

The basic rule says your speed must be reasonable and careful for the conditions, on every road at all times. In fog, rain or heavy traffic, a speed under the limit can still be too fast.

  6. 6. What is a "safety corridor" on an Oregon highway?

    Show the answer

Answer: B. A stretch with more deadly and serious-injury crashes than the statewide average

Safety corridors are marked stretches of highway with an above-average record of fatal and serious crashes. When you see the sign, turn on your lights and drive with extra care.

  7. 7. When you are moving in traffic, how far ahead of a turn or lane change must you start signaling?

    Show the answer

Answer: B. At least 100 feet

Oregon's manual calls for your signal at least 100 feet before you turn or change lanes. That gives drivers around you time to see what you plan to do.

  8. 8. Inside city limits, a U-turn is not allowed anywhere your car cannot be seen by traffic coming from either direction within what distance?

    Show the answer

    Answer: C. 500 feet

Within a city, you may not make a U-turn where drivers from either direction cannot see you within 500 feet. Outside city limits the distance is 1,000 feet.

  9. 9. You are turning at an intersection that has a traffic signal, and a pedestrian is crossing the street you are turning onto. Before you begin the turn, how far must the pedestrian be from the lane you are turning into?

    Show the answer

Answer: B. At least 6 feet

At a signal, wait until the person crossing is 6 feet or more from the lane you will turn into. Until then, stay stopped.

  10. 10. A person carrying a white cane starts across the road in front of you, and then your light turns green. What must you do?

    Show the answer

Answer: D. Stay stopped until the person has crossed the whole road

Oregon law gives the right of way to a pedestrian who uses a white cane or a guide dog. Stay stopped until the person has reached the far side of the road, even if your light is green.
