10 questions. Pick an answer to see if you are right.

  1. 1. Unless a sign shows another limit, how fast may you drive on a Nebraska expressway that is part of the state highway system?

    Show the answer

    Answer: B. 70 mph

Expressways and super-two highways on the state highway system have a 70 mph limit unless posted. Other state highways default to 65 mph, so keep watching for speed signs.

Source: Section 4, Rules of the Road: 4C-1 Maximum Speed Limits, p. 52

  2. 2. You are driving through a business district and see no posted limit. What is the most you may drive?

    Show the answer

    Answer: D. 20 mph

The default limit in a Nebraska business district is 20 mph, lower than in residential areas. Stay at or under 20 when no sign sets a different limit.

Source: Section 4, Rules of the Road: 4C-1 Maximum Speed Limits, p. 52

  3. 3. With no sign posted, what is the top legal speed on a gravel road in Nebraska?

    Show the answer

    Answer: A. 50 mph

Roads that are gravel or not dustless have a 50 mph limit unless posted otherwise. Paved roads off the state highway system allow 55, so slow down when the pavement ends.

Source: Section 4, Rules of the Road: 4C-1 Maximum Speed Limits, p. 52

  4. 4. What is the maximum speed limit on Nebraska's rural interstate highways?

    Show the answer

    Answer: C. 75 mph

Rural interstates are the fastest roads in the state, with a 75 mph limit. Watch for lower posted limits near cities and in work zones.

Source: Section 4, Rules of the Road: 4C-1 Maximum Speed Limits, p. 52

  5. 5. In Nebraska, what happens to a speeding fine in a school zone, or in a work zone while workers are present?

    Show the answer

    Answer: B. It is doubled

Fines double in school zones and in work zones when workers are there. Slow down, obey the signs and be ready to stop at any time.

Source: Section 4, Rules of the Road: 4C-3 Adjusting Speed for Work and School Zones, p. 53

  6. 6. A school bus ahead of you turns on its overhead amber (yellow) warning lights. What should you do?

    Show the answer

Answer: A. Slow to 25 mph and get ready to stop

Amber lights mean the bus is about to stop for children. Whether you are meeting or following it, slow to 25 mph and be ready to stop when the red lights and stop arm come on.

Source: Section 6, Sharing the Road: 6E-1 Overhead Amber Warning Lights, p. 70

  7. 7. You are overtaking a bicyclist who is going the same way as you. What is the least side clearance Nebraska law requires as you pass?

    Show the answer

    Answer: D. Three feet

Keep at least three feet between your vehicle and the bicycle until you are safely past it. If you cannot give that much room, slow down and wait for a safe chance to pass.

Source: Section 6, Sharing the Road: 6B Bicyclists, p. 69

  8. 8. How close to a crosswalk at an intersection may you park in Nebraska?

    Show the answer

    Answer: B. 20 feet

Parking closer than 20 feet to an intersection crosswalk is not allowed, which keeps people who are crossing in view. Leave at least that much room.

Source: Section 4, Rules of the Road: 4F-2 Where Not to Park or Stop a Vehicle, p. 57

  9. 9. A stop sign stands at the side of the road. What is the closest you may park to it?

    Show the answer

    Answer: C. 30 feet

Nebraska bans parking within 30 feet of a stop sign, yield sign, flashing signal or other traffic control device at the roadside. A parked car there would block drivers' view of the sign.

Source: Section 4, Rules of the Road: 4F-2 Where Not to Park or Stop a Vehicle, p. 57

  10. 10. What is the minimum distance you must keep between your parked car and the nearest railroad tracks?

    Show the answer

    Answer: D. 50 feet

You may not park within 50 feet of railroad tracks. Park farther away so trains and traffic at the crossing are not put at risk.

Learner permit from
age 14

The Class O written test, which is also the written test for the LPE, LPD and School Permit, has 25 questions, and you may miss no more than 5 (80% to pass); the examiner manual sets no different rule by age. Source.

The youngest learner permit is the School Learner's Permit (LPE), from age 14, for students who will qualify for a School Permit; the regular Learner's Permit (LPD) is issued on or after the 15th birthday and lasts one year. To move up to a Provisional Operator's Permit at 16, you must have held a permit for six months and either finish a DMV-approved driver safety course or log 50 supervised hours, 10 of them at night. Source.

The questions come from the Nebraska Driver's Manual (Class O Drivers Manual, English) (1-2025 (January 2025, as named in the file title on the DMV Manuals page; PDF last modified June 2025), read 2026-10-12), which is what the real test is written from. Read it alongside these questions: every answer above names the section it comes from.

Nebraska rules worth knowing before the test

  • Nebraska has four steps for teens: School Learner's Permit (LPE) at 14, School Permit (SCP) at 14 years and 2 months for students who live or go to school outside a city of 5,000 or more, Learner's Permit (LPD) at 15, and Provisional Operator's Permit (POP) at 16. Source
  • Every permit holder (LPE, LPD, SCP and POP) is banned from using any interactive wireless device, such as a phone, while the car is moving. Source
  • When a permit holder drives, everyone in the car, the driver included, must wear a seat belt. Source
  • A POP holder under 18 can move up to a full Class O license after holding the POP for 12 months with fewer than three points in the last 12 months; the written and drive tests are then waived. Source
  • Nebraska has zero tolerance for drivers under 21: the legal limit for them is .02% BAC, and a first offense means the court holds the permit or license for 30 days. Source
  • Points stop counting two years after the date of the violation, but convictions stay on your record for five years. Source
  • When passing a bicycle going your way, leave at least three feet of space until you are safely past; if you cannot, slow down and wait. Source

Signs, markings and signals
