West Virginia rules worth knowing before the test

  • The knowledge test has 25 questions and you need 19 right. The test is timed, and any question left unanswered when time runs out counts as wrong. Source
  • If you fail the knowledge test or the road skills test, you cannot test again within one week. Source
  • Points stay on your record for two years from the conviction date. At 6 points the DMV mails you a warning letter, and at 12 points your license can be suspended. Source
  • To pass the vision screening you need 20/40 vision or better, with or without regular glasses or contacts. If you need lenses to reach 20/40, your license will say so. Source
  • Passing a stopped school bus brings at least a 60-day license suspension plus a fine of at least $500 or up to six months in jail for a first offense. Source
  • A West Virginia school zone covers the school property plus any road next to it for 125 feet beyond the school grounds. Source
  • Using a hand-held phone while driving brings no points for the first two offenses, but a third offense adds 3 points along with the fine. Source
  • You may not turn around near a curve or close to the top of a hill if a driver coming from either direction could not see you within 500 feet. Source
