Pennsylvania rules worth knowing before the test

  • If you fail the knowledge test, you can try again the next business day. You may only take it once a day, at any test center. Source
  • A learner's permit is good for one year from the date it is issued. Source
  • A driver under 18, with a permit or a junior license, may not carry more passengers than the car has seat belts. Source
  • A junior license turns into a regular license by itself on your 18th birthday. You can switch earlier after a year with a junior license if you passed an approved driver training course and had no at-fault crash and no violation for that year. Source
  • If you move to Pennsylvania with a valid license from another state, you have 60 days to get a Pennsylvania license and hand in the old one. Source
  • Tell PennDOT within 15 days when your name or address changes, even if you are moving out of state. Source
  • After you pull over for an emergency vehicle and it goes by, check that no other one is coming, then drive on and stay at least 500 feet behind it. Source
  • PennDOT starts taking action when your record reaches 6 points. Each full 12 months with no violation, suspension or revocation takes 3 points off. Source
