You can get a Texas learner license at 15, once you finish the classroom part of driver education and pass the vision and knowledge exams. If you are under 18, you must hold it for at least six months before you can get a provisional license, and a licensed adult 21 or older with a year of driving experience must sit beside you whenever you drive. The questions come from the Texas Driver Handbook (DPS form DL-7) (Revised January 2026 (as printed on the handbook); read from the Internet Archive copy of this exact DPS URL because DPS's server could not be reached, read 2026-10-12), which is what the real test is written from. Texas rules worth knowing before the test
- Anyone under 25 must finish a state-approved driver education course before Texas will issue a driver license, unless they already hold a valid license from another state. Source
- Teen driver education in Texas is 24 hours in the classroom plus 44 hours of in-car training. You can start the classroom part at 14. Source
- A learner license ends on your 18th birthday. If it is suspended, the six-month holding period is extended by the days of the suspension. Source
- The adult beside a learner must stay alert: it is an offense for them to sleep, be intoxicated or do anything that stops them from watching the driver. Source
- Your driver education school may give you the vision, road sign and traffic law parts of the license exam, so you may not need to take them at a DPS office. Source
- A provisional license ends on your 18th birthday. Your license loses its under-21 restrictions at the first renewal after you turn 21. Source
