40 (80%)
Learner permit from
age 16

The knowledge test has 50 questions (plus one survey question about organ donation), and you need 40 right (80%) to pass; the manual describes no separate version by age. Source.

At 16 you can get a special learner permit, but only through an approved behind-the-wheel driver training course; at 17 you can get an examination permit without a course. Permit holders under 21 must practice at least six months, with at least 50 hours (10 in darkness), before the road test. Source.

The questions come from the New Jersey Driver Manual (2026, read 2026-10-12), which is what the real test is written from. Read it alongside these questions: every answer above names the section it comes from.

New Jersey rules worth knowing before the test

  • Using a handheld phone or texting while driving is a primary offense, so police can stop you for that alone. Hands-free use is legal for fully licensed adults but discouraged. Source
  • The Move Over law says to shift to a lane not next to a stopped emergency, tow, road crew or disabled vehicle showing flashing lights, flares or triangles. If you cannot change lanes safely, slow below the speed limit and be ready to stop. Source
  • You must clear snow and ice from your hood, roof, trunk and windshield before driving, even if none of it would fly off. Source
  • Everyone in a car, van, pickup or SUV must wear a seat belt. Police can stop you just for an unbelted driver, front-seat passenger or child under 18; unbelted adults in the back seat can be ticketed if you are stopped for something else. The driver answers for passengers under 18, and GDL drivers must make sure everyone in the car is belted. Source
  • A two-year probationary period starts when you get your permit. If you are convicted of at least two moving violations adding up to 4 points or more in that time, you must take the Probationary Driver Program. Source
  • Each year you go without a violation or suspension, up to three points come off your record, but never below zero. Violations in other states add two points. Source
  • Unless a sign forbids it, you may turn right on red after a full stop, yielding to all traffic and pedestrians. Source

Signs, markings and signals

Every state’s test asks about road signs, which follow one national standard. Practise them with pictures on the road signs test.
